Look closely at a moss agate and you would swear you were seeing a tiny forest sealed in stone. Those green plumes are not plants at all. They are mineral inclusions, mostly chlorite and hornblende, that crept through the silica as it hardened millions of years ago, branching out in patterns that look uncannily like moss, lichen and tree canopies. Each of these points has been cut and hand-polished to show off that hidden garden from every side, with milky white and pale grey agate acting as the sky behind the trees.

Metaphysical Properties

  • Growth - Long known as the gardener's stone, moss agate is tied to new growth, fresh starts and gentle progress.
  • Abundance - Traditionally carried to attract prosperity and encourage things to flourish.
  • Grounding - Its deep connection to the natural world makes it a steadying stone for anyone feeling unmoored.
  • Balance - Associated with emotional steadiness and finding your footing through periods of change.

Choose Your Point

Point #1 - Lichen Bloom
8cm tall
A soft dove-grey and white body scattered with olive-green lichen-like blooms that cluster thickly through the middle and trail down toward the base. Beautifully varied texture, with some inclusions raised and crusty and others fine as ink. The most naturalistic of the group.

Point #2 - Deep Thicket
8.5cm tall
The densest and most dramatic of the group, packed edge to edge with dark olive and forest-green inclusions that read like a wood in high summer. Bright white agate breaks through in soft clouds near the crown and along one face, and a few tiny druzy pockets sparkle when the light hits.

Point #3 - Misty Morning
8.5cm tall
The palest and most translucent, a soft grey-white body with delicate dark green branching tracing across the surface like bare trees in fog. Glassy, cool and beautifully calm, with a lovely glow when backlit.

Point #4 - Spring Canopy
8cm tall
The freshest in tone, with bright apple and sage-green plumes blooming across a pale blue-grey body. Softly layered rather than dense, so the pattern reads like new leaves opening. Gently translucent at the tip.

Point #5 - Riverbed
8cm tall
Cool blue-grey agate threaded with fine dark green and gold-green channels that wander across the faces like streams seen from above. A small natural vug near the centre adds character, and the whole piece has a soft watery translucence.

About the Material
Moss agate is a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz, and despite the name it is not a true banded agate. The green dendritic patterns come from inclusions of iron and manganese-rich minerals such as chlorite and hornblende that were suspended in the silica as it crystallised. No two pieces can ever repeat the same pattern, which is why collectors chase this stone. Read more about this crystal in our Crystal Encyclopedia!
